The Station

The Thompson family's cattle breeding story starts in 1995 with the purchase of Mundabullangana Station, 60 kilometers south of Port Hedland in Western Australia.

Included in the sale was the existing Shorthorn-cross breeder herd running with mixed Brahman bulls. After our first muster in 1996 a decision had to be made what breed of cattle was best suited to the country on Munda but also taking in to account the market options of those days. With live export options opening up favouring Bos Indicus types and the southern and domestic buyers preferring red Bos Taurus types, and on the trusted advice from agent Kim Goad, the family settled on a bit of both and chose the breed Droughtmasters.

However, the shift was slow from the original Shorthorn Brahman cross mob by only buying replacement Droughtmaster bulls each year starting in 1998.

A watershed moment in 2006 while unloading a truck of weaners that had come down from Munda Station to the farm in Gingin, it was clear to Mike and Kim that the whole herd needed to undergo a significant overhaul to improve the quality. Michael Thompson flew to the station for that muster and sold every Brahman bull that we could yard and every female that wasn’t red. To fix the issues in conformation, bone and muscle that was showing up in the progeny, the most affordable option was to simply buy a better class of Droughtmaster bull.
At the 2007 Droughtmaster National sale in Rockhampton saw the purchase of nearly 60 sires plus 15 paddock stud bulls, followed up by 120 sires bulls bought from the National Sale and private vendors in 2009.

Mike took the opportunity to talk to the best breeders at that Nation Sale and asked for first offer to choose and buy from their yearling bulls after they had selected their sale teams.

This proved a successful proposition with Mike and Kim flying to QLD in March, selecting the younger bulls and then trucking them to Munda Station at a good weight ready to go to work in the tough conditions of the Pilbara without the excess kilos from sale preparation.
The Munda Station sire battery was topped up with 50 bulls purchased and trucked over from 10 of the top Queensland studs each year from then on.

This heavy investment in the best of Queensland genetics not only improved our own commercial herd, but also the herds of other pastoralists who saw value in Munda cattle.

This culminated in the first sale of commercial bulls from
Munda Station in 2011 to WA pastoralist, Victor Gleeson, Mulga
Downs Newman.
He purchased 85. This grew to 200 in 2012, then on to 400 in 2013, to well over 500 commercial bulls sold each year to pastoralists all over Australia, seeing Munda Station transform from a once struggling cross bred herd to a reputable source of Droughtmaster genetics.
